Local 500 Contestant Has Hit 136 MPH in Practice

This department learned in a telephone conversation Thursday evening with Jimmy Daywalt, Wabash’s first and only entrant in the 500-Mile Memorial Day race, that in all probability the local race car driver will attempt to qualify in the time trials at the Indianapolis Speedway Saturday.

The Wabash pilot has been clocked at 136 miles per hour in the No. 19, the new Sumar Special owned by Chapman S. Root of Terre Haute, in practice runs, but both Daywalt and Root’s mechanics wanted the car to run faster.

On May 31, 1954, Jimmy started 2nd in the #19 Sumar Kurtis-Offy at the Indianapolis 500.  He finished 27th after having contact in the Northwest turn.  He earned $4,444 for this race.

July 5, 1954, Darlington

At Darlington on July 5, 1954, Jimmy started 20th in the #16 Auto Shippers Kurtis-Offy.  He finished 23rd because of contact in a turn.  He earned $75 for this race.

August 29, 1954, Milwaukee

At Milwaukee on August 29, 1954, Jimmy qualified 13th in the #19 Hopkins Moore D-Offy.  He finished 21st, earning $154.
